May 5, the sun had just set and we see a family sitting at the dining table. They all pray together, thanking Allah (God) for all that they have been given and proceed to open there fast with a luxurious meal.

Ramadan, a time where all Muslims fast (no water or food) from the crack of dawn till sunset. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is seen as an act of worship and a way to get closer to God. It also helps Muslims become more compassionate for those in need. Fasting is very important as it is also one of the five pillars of Islam (Charity, Haji or Migration, Fasting, Prayer, and Faith). During the holy month of Ramadan, you are not allowed to lie. This month is a perfect opportunity for all your sins to be washed away by simply fasting. Ramadan is a tradition that has been continued for many years.

During the month, Muslims wake up around 4:30 to 5:10 am for their opening meal , Suhoor. Throughout the day it shows Muslims the feeling of an empty stomach reminding them of those who are unfortunate. Around sunset, Muslims break their fast sitting around the table for Iftar, the evening meal to open their fast. It is most recommended to sit around with others during Iftar and Suhoor. As it is also highly recommended to open your fast by eating dates (Prophet Muhammed, the last prophet in the Islamic religion, opened his fast by eating dates it has been a tradition since). Currently, Ramadan takes place from May 5 to June 4.

The last ten days are the holiest for it is believed that it is the first time the Quran (religious text of Islam) to Prophet Muhammed. At the end of Ramadan, there is a big celebration called Eid al-Fitr. On this day you feast and spend time with your loved ones.

“Ramadan honors the values at the heart of Islam – like compassion and service to others. It reminds us to give generously, and put the needs of others before our own – this month, and throughout the year,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A high school student (wishes to stay anonymous) states “Ramadan helps me realize just how lucky I am to have food, there are many people in the world that are not as lucky as me. There are kids all around the world just like me but yet they go to bed starving at night, without comfort in the world.” As stated above, there are many kids  who don’t have something as necessary as food. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, admits this in a very inspiring speech given on May 5, 2019. “Ramadan honors the values at the heart of Islam – like compassion and service to others. It reminds us to give generously, and put the needs of others before our own – this month, and throughout the year.” His words are nothing but the truth.
